A.J. Horan / Stylist

A.J. Horan has only been working behind his chair at fresche for two years, but this Chicago-born artist has been working towards his dream career for many years. “I fell in love with hair many years ago.” A little over two years ago that “just right” opportunity was presented to him by Sebastian Platform Artist and fresche owner, Joi Rooks. Rooks asked A.J. to join her staff and apprentice under her at fresche.

Two years into the industry he has a genuine passion for the art of hair cutting design and believes that everyone needs to have a little colour in their life! A.J. thrives on new ideas and truly enjoys all salon work, from up-dos to blowouts. A.J. has had intense advanced cutting and coloring training from his mentor Joi Rooks. For the past two years he has attended several advanced classes to challenge his already high-level of skill and technique.

He has been a volunteer stylist for the Paul Mitchell “Day of Beauty,” assisted in several fashion shows, and has done session work for photo shoots. Along with cutting and colouring classes, he has attended several professional salon business seminars, to help build the foundation of a successful/passionate career. When it comes to finishing hair, A.J. is not afraid to push the boundaries of volume, texture or shine. He enjoys everything from the classic sleek look to a teased diffused head of curls. Enhancing a great haircut with an even better blow out and proper knowledge of styling product are all essential elements that A.J. shares with each and every client.

A.J. was the recipient of the Rising Star award for 2009, Stylist of the Month winner for March 2010, and Rising Star award for 2010.

Inspiration

My inspiration really comes from many areas. The support that I have received along my journey into the hair world from my friends and family is not only an inspiration to me, but something I am very grateful to have. Since joining this industry, I get daily inspiration from Joi Rooks, my mentor and trainer. Through watching her work and her creativity I have many ideas emerge. I also look toward fashion and architecture for inspiration. Seeing the satisfaction on a client’s face and the way they feel when they leave is also a great inspiration.

Favorite Hair Product

Sebastian’s Craft Clay – it’s my favorite because it has a flexible hold with a matte finish. Sebastian’s Mousse Forte – because it has the control and hold I need that you can create curl with! And of course, Sebastian’s Volupt spray – because you can create beachy waves or massage it into hair while dry to create soft voluptuous curls.

Worst Childhood Hair Memory

The world’s worst bowl cut. My mom would have me in the kitchen with a bath towel around my neck and cut my hair w/clippers without a guard! I was the cool kid in the 7th grade with a wacked out bowl cut!
